Tools used by locksmiths

Locksmiths are persons who repair and make locks and supply keys. They install or modify locks, deadbolts and other mechanical or electronic locking devices, rekey locks, make duplicate keys or cards, generate or program new keys/cards for locks and respond to emergency calls to unlock vehicles, homes and businesses.

Since the job of locksmiths is not easy, they have to be trained and must be skilled enough to do all these correctly. The Society of Professional Locksmiths says a true professional can pick a lock without damaging it with the use of the right tools and equipment.

Locksmiths usually carry a belt that is stocked with power tools, wrenches and lock picking devices.

There are a wide range of tools that locksmiths used in their job. Among them are the bolt cutter, torsion wrench, hook pick, key duplication machine, bump key, slim shim and jackknife pick.

There is also the lock disassembly and rekeying tool kit, lock picks, key gauge which is used to determine the depths of cut on keys, a lock inspection light that is used in opening cars and safes, a locksmith hammer, a nylon pry-bay set used for opening cars, an automobile door panel removal set, a plug spinner that is used to spin locks that were picked in the wrong direction, a broker key extraction kit, the locksmith multi tool set, depth and space keys, a tubular lock pick, a metal stamp kit that is used to mark keys, a key check which helps identify the correct key blank for duplication, a code machine, key machine and a key punch set


Bolt cutter

This tool is used for cutting locks that have been jammed though this must be used with care as this can damage items.


Torsion wrench

This tool is used to pick most locks and also help keep all the pins in place after these are taken from the lock.


Hook pick

Also known as a feeler, all locksmiths commonly use this tool to pick any lock, which comes in different kinds for different sizes of locks.


Key duplication machine

This machine is used to make new keys in just a few minutes.


Bump key or lock picks

These tools are used to open many simple locks.


Slim shim

This tool is used to unlock car doors without using a key. Locksmiths commonly use this tool in car lockout.


Jackknife pick

This small tool comes with 4 to 5 picks that are used to pick simple locks in the house such as in the bedroom or bathroom.
